Despite the pandemic, Peru's Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (Midagri) expects Peruvian potato exports to generate $5 million by the end of the year, with an estimated 18,000 tons of potatoes, including varieties suitable for processing, expected to be exported, primarily to the United States and Europe. Bolivia is a significant buyer of fresh Peruvian potatoes. The potato industry in Peru, with around 150,000 family farmers, has seen increased demand and promotion of native potatoes in the culinary world. These potatoes are perceived as safer, healthier, more natural, and more nutritious, with the International Potato Center identifying 70 varieties suitable for frying. The total area for native potato cultivation in Peru is 68,000 hectares, with an average production cost of $7,000 per hectare, leading to an investment of $476 million from producers each agricultural season.
