Poland has requested a derogation from the EU's ban on sprat fishing in April at depths greater than 65m. The request, made by Deputy Minister of Agriculture Jacek Czerniak to EU Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginijus Sinkevičius, is based on the need to provide high-protein food for Ukrainian soldiers. The proposal, supported by a scientific analysis from the Sea Fisheries Institute, aims to ensure a steady supply of sprats and reduce financial losses from the current ban on fishing for pelagic fish from April to August.
