Europe is expected to see a 15% decrease in pear harvest this year, according to the NFO, due to a strong moult and quality issues. Fruit consultant Jos de Wit warns growers to prepare for a reduced yield, advising them to use the situation to strengthen their negotiating position. The main pear-growing countries are all experiencing similar issues, with significant damage in Belgium from frost and cold. In Italy, the Abate Fetel variety is expected to have half the usual harvest, and quality issues are widespread. Despite these challenges, some regions like Noord-Holland are optimistic, with grower Erik Appelman expecting a good harvest from older trees. The cause of the moult and quality issues is not yet clear, although de Wit notes differences in the use of gibberellins.
