The Xunta de Galicia will launch a vaccination campaign against bluetongue disease on March 7, in response to four outbreaks of the disease in Galicia, Spain. The disease, transmitted by mosquitoes, has not been seen in the region for 14 years. The campaign will cover over 350,000 animals in areas under restriction, making vaccination mandatory and free for animals over three months old. The movement of animals from restricted areas will be permitted only if they are from vaccinated farms, and animals under four months old must be from vaccinated mothers. The campaign will begin with sheep farms receiving one dose, and cattle receiving two doses, separated by 21 days. Additionally, farms and vehicles will be disinfected.
