Morocco: Saffron cultivation generates more than 139 million dirhams

The cultivation of saffron has gained in importance in Morocco over the past few years. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, the area reserved for this crop increased from 610 ha in 2008 to 1,826 hectares in 2018. Thanks to the Green Morocco Plan, the area of saffron cultivated has more than tripled in just 10 years, exceeding 35% target set by the agricultural strategy. Indeed, it was 1,350 hectares at the start. As for the area irrigated with the drip irrigation system, it reached 1,600 hectares in 2018, against 210 hectares in 2008, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture.
