In 2022, Morocco became the world's leading exporter of canned sardines, exporting 152,137 tonnes with a value of around MAD 5.9 billion ($581 million). The sardine fishery is a significant part of Morocco's economy and creates numerous job opportunities. However, the fisheries industry faces challenges such as high fuel and raw material costs, climate change, and biodiversity threats. To address these challenges, the Department of Maritime Fisheries has implemented management plans, spatial planning, and developed marine protected areas. Despite the COVID-19 crisis, the sector showed resilience and maintained all activities.
