The Beni Mellal-Khenifra region in central Morocco is transforming its farming sector towards fish farming, particularly raising Asian carp, due to the impact of drought on traditional agriculture. This change is helping to control water eutrophication, improve irrigation water quality, and reduce macrophytes in canals. The Asmak Nile Company is a key player in this industry, producing both Asian carp for water cleaning and tilapia for human consumption. Morocco has a long history of aquaculture, with significant investment and support from the Netherlands and Norway. The region has 24 aquaculture projects in development, including shellfish and seaweed farming, making it a crucial hub for Morocco's aquaculture industry, especially for inland areas like Beni Mellal-Khenifra.
