Mozambique is permitted to import cashews and macadamia nuts, both for human consumption, that are locally grown. The majority of global unshelled cashews come from West and East African countries, with Côte d'Ivoire being the largest producer. The shelling rate in Africa is less than 15%. In 2021, Mozambique produced between 1,500 and 2,500 tons of shelled macadamia nuts, which are primarily exported to South African processing plants for kernel re-export or directly as shells. By 2023, Niassa Province in northern Mozambique plans to restore land for macadamia nut farming and build the first macadamia nut processing plant in the area. Exported cashews to China must not carry certain quarantine pests and must be free of impurities like live insects and soil.
