The latest report by the Mozambican Institute of Statistics reveals a persistent gap between cereal production per capita and food security requirements, with figures remaining below the required level, at 94.3 kilograms per capita in 2019. This contrasts with higher production levels of cassava and sweet potatoes. Cash crop production remained stable, and there was a slight increase in chicken meat production. However, agricultural sector credit remained low compared to the sector's contribution to GDP, and state budget allocations to agriculture were less than 10% between 2015 and 2019. The report also highlights severe food insecurity and malnutrition among children, with 29.9% of families and 12.3% of children under 5 affected in 2019.
