Myanmar's domestic oil mills are capable of producing approximately 60,000 tons of edible oil per month, falling short of the country's monthly demand of 100,000 tons, resulting in a necessity to import 50,000 tons of edible oil monthly. U Tun Tun Oo, vice chairman of the Myanmar Oil Mill Owners Association, emphasized the importance of increasing oil crop output to achieve self-sufficiency. The country's oil crop yield is around 200 million baskets annually, 70% of which is used for edible oil production. There are over 3,000 legally registered oil mills in Myanmar, with the total likely reaching around 5,000 when unregistered and rural oil mills are taken into account.
