The article highlights the impact of excessive rainfall in Ukraine's Kherson region, which has been favorable for rice cultivation despite the challenges it poses to other crops. Despite the weather conditions, the Rice Institute's experimental farm has seen good results, with rice plantations showing promise, albeit vulnerable to future rains in August. The article also discusses the struggle of local farmers with low prices for rice, which fail to cover production costs and hinder infrastructure development. Currently, imported rice, sold at dumped prices and with preferential customs rates, dominates the Ukrainian market, negatively impacting local production. Nonetheless, the Institute is using this challenge to develop new rice varieties and hybrids that can better adapt to the region's climate, which is increasingly similar to Southeast Asian conditions.
