In January 2022, Namibia faced a shortage of onions and potatoes, prompting the government to reopen national borders to import these crops without restriction. Despite this shortage, the country is expected to have a sufficient local supply of watermelons, beetroot, and cucumbers for the months of January to March 2022. The Namibian Agronomic Board has urged local growers, financial institutions, and agricultural sector stakeholders to use this opportunity to grow the sector and protect the country from food insecurity due to foreign crises. Additionally, Agribank reported that food inflation in Namibia increased from 5.5% in January 2021 to 5.8% in January 2022, rising faster than any other item in the average consumer shopping basket.
