(Daejeon=Yonhap News) Reporter Park Joo-young = The Korea National Arboretum announced on the 29th that the new variety of loosestrife 'Baekdu Pink', applied for by the National Baekdu-daegan Arboretum, has obtained plant variety protection rights.
The Baekdu Pink (Lythrum salicaria 'Baekdubunhong') is characterized by its lighter pink flowers compared to the native loosestrife.
It was first discovered in 2019 in the rock garden of the National Baekdu-daegan Arboretum's exhibition garden.
The National Baekdu-daegan Arboretum confirmed that the same traits were maintained after 2 years of tissue culture and applied for the first new variety Baekdu Pink in June 2022.
Subsequently, the National Forest Seed and Variety Management Center decided on plant variety protection after 2 years of cultivation examination, which will protect all rights related to the production and sale of the crop for the next 20 years.
Baekdu Pink will be available for purchase at the National Baekdu-daegan Arboretum's garden shop starting next year.
