A new garlic variety called "Zhanub" has been patented by the Scientific Research Institute of Vegetable Crops, Melons and Potatoes of Uzbekistan. The variety, which means 'South', has a quick ripening period of 200-215 days and produces large bulbs with 13 cloves. It meets modern market requirements for transportability and shelf life. The early harvest season allows Uzbek exporters to enter foreign markets almost a month earlier than usual. The institute has also developed a new rocambole garlic variety called "Baraka", which is expected to be grown in most Uzbek farms.
