A recent report by the European Union's JRC reveals that the EU aquaculture sector, which accounted for about 25% of the EU's seafood consumption, had produced 1.2 million tonnes and generated €4.1 billion in turnover in 2018. The sector was comprised of approximately 15,000 businesses, leading to the employment of 69,000 people across four primary countries: Spain, France, Italy, and Greece. However, the sector has been negatively impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, with a decrease in income sources and an increase in costs, resulting in a 17% drop in sales volume and an 8% decrease in prices. The report also highlighted social demographic trends within the sector, indicating a male-dominated workforce that tends to be older and more locally employed.
