In 2022, New Zealand is projected to achieve the world's highest potato yield, with an average of 50.9 tons per hectare, surpassing the United States and Denmark, as per the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization and Potatoes New Zealand. Despite this, the country's potato production has seen a decrease, dropping by 8.1% to 419.2 thousand tons in the 2022/23 season compared to the previous year, and by 20.5% compared to the 2018/19 season. This decline was despite the cultivation of 8,424 hectares by 176 commercial growers, with the industry's total production value estimated at NZ$931.3 million. The export of table potatoes, mainly to Fiji, also experienced a decrease in prices, falling from NZ$1,200 to NZ$400 per tonne.
