New Zealand: Scientists advance in the development of fruits without the need for bushes or trees, only using cells

Fruits created with cells joins product innovation, the development allows fruits to be created with technology without the need for environmental resources. They grow plant cells to produce fruits without the need for trees or bushes, in order to use fewer environmental resources and improve the impact of food production through science. The development is led by New Zealand scientists who have tested blueberries, apples, cherries, strawberries, peaches, nectarines and grapes, motivated by the cell-based meat and seafood that is soon to hit the market. Dr. Ben Schon, scientist and Food by Design program leader at Plant and Food Research, commented that with cultured meat developments there is widespread interest and development in cellular food production systems.
