Nigeria: Sugar revolution, the journey so far

Dike Onwuamaeze enumerates efforts put in place by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Niyi Adebayo, to enable Nigeria to attain self-sufficiency in sugar production by growing the required local capacity to meet the demand for sugar, create large number of jobs for Nigerians and stem the tide of unbridled importation of sugar and its by-products. The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Mr. Niyi Adebayo, probably had one goal in mind when he switched on the microphone to address a State House press conference on March 17, 2022. The goal was to give Nigeria's account on its quest to attain self-sufficiency in sugar production, which is still a journey in progress, through the implementation of the country's National Sugar Master Plan (NSMP) and the Backward Integration Program (BIP) that it birthed.
