ICRISAT's Country Representative in Niger, Dr. Malick Niango Ba, met with the country's Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Alambedji Abba Issa, to discuss the organization's ongoing support and initiatives aimed at boosting Niger's agricultural sector. The discussion focused on addressing the low productivity of groundnuts in the region and proposing solutions to reduce import dependency on cooking oil. ICRISAT's past successes in the Dosso region with the Tropical Legumes I and II projects were highlighted, and the potential of the Sorghum and Millet compact of the Technologies for African Agriculture Transformation (TAAT) of the African Development Bank for further support was explored. The importance of an effectively functioning genebank in Sadore was emphasized, and the prospect of organizing a new International Millet Festival in 2022 was suggested. The Minister expressed his interest in visiting an ICRISAT research station in Niger.
