Indonesia is facing the possibility of chicken imports due to the high price of domestic chicken, which is becoming increasingly expensive compared to other countries. This is largely due to the rising production costs, particularly the high cost of corn, a key component of poultry feed, which is three times more expensive in Indonesia than the average international price. The Director General of Domestic Trade of the Ministry of Trade, Syailendra, has noted that the high price of feed and chickens is making the domestic chicken industry less competitive. Currently, Indonesia is importing broodstock or Grand Parents Stock (GPS) rather than fully cooked chicken meat, with imports usually being below 1,000 tonnes since 2017, and only the government is allowed to import.
