The Cooperativa Agraria Norandino is planning to invest US $ 1 million in constructing a new processing plant to produce cocoa and chocolate products. The plant is expected to be located in the same building as the existing cocoa paste processing plant in Piura. The cooperative, which currently works with 600 cocoa farmers and hopes to expand to include those from Ecuador, is aiming for higher prices and returns by producing final products rather than just powder and butter. The new plant is projected to have a capacity of 4,000 tons per year and is expected to take a year to install. However, there are obstacles to importing organic cocoa from Ecuador due to Peru's requirement for fumigation, which contradicts the organic category.
