The 43rd meeting of the North-East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) concluded with discussions on sustainable fish stock management and combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The EU expressed concern over the lack of compliance reports and the absence of action against infringements. The EU also criticized Russia for illegal fishing activities and proposed the inclusion of several vessels from Panama and the Bahamas in the NEAFC IUU list due to enforcement lapses. Despite EU opposition, NEAFC decided to grant Panama and the Bahamas cooperating non-contracting party status and will decide on amending the IUU list in the first half of 2025. The EU intends to advocate for stricter compliance and cooperation among member states.
