The European Union (E.U.) has opened 12 time-limited import quotas for Norwegian seafood, including mackerel, herring, and wild-caught shrimp, as part of a broader agreement with Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. This agreement, which covers the period from 1 May 2021 to 30 April 2028, replaces the previous fisheries protocol and is retroactive. The quota volume for the passing period will be distributed over the remainder of the agreement until 30 May 2028. If the quotas are not fully utilized, the remaining volume can be drawn on until 30 May 2030 or until the start of a new duty-free quota period. The negotiations for this agreement began in June 2022 and were approved by the E.U. in June 2023, awaiting approval from the Norwegian Parliament.
