October saw a significant increase in the value and sales volume of mackerel exports, reaching a record high of NOK 2.5 billion, a 42% increase from the previous year. Japan, South Korea, and China were the largest markets. Despite a 5% reduction in the quota compared to the previous year, more mackerel was caught this year due to the possibility of carrying over quotas. The Head of Pelagic Species at the Norwegian Seafood Council, Jan Eirik Johnsen, attributes the price increase to high demand, lower domestic catches, and reduced Atlantic mackerel quotas.
