(Pocheon=Yonhap News) Reporter Kim Do-yoon = The National Institute of Forest Science announced on the 2nd that 'Yew' was selected as our October garden plant.
Yew is an evergreen coniferous tree with a stem lying horizontally on the ground and blue-green leaves that create harmony. It is highly resistant to both cold and heat and is easy to manage, making it a popular choice for gardens.
This plant can be shaped according to the gardener's pruning.
It can be used to cover rocks or planted along boundaries to create various effects, and the gentle curves of its stems evoke the melody of music.
In winter, snow piled on its green leaves adds vitality to the garden.
It grows well in well-drained sandy soil with plenty of sunlight, but poor ventilation can lead to disease and pests, so it is necessary to maintain proper spacing and periodic pruning.
Propagation is mainly done through cuttings, and germination using seeds is also possible.
Im Yeon-jin, Director of the Forest Biological Resources Utilization Center at the National Institute of Forest Science, recommended it, saying, "Yew is a wonderful plant that can enhance the quality of a garden with its elegant appearance and ease of care."
