The Mexican Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader) has introduced the Octopus Fisheries Management Plan for the east coast of Baja California in the Official Gazette of the Federation. The plan, which includes 50 actions across six components, aims to sustain mollusk populations, prevent overexploitation, and protect the ecosystem. It also seeks to balance economic benefits for fishermen with ecosystem health. The plan was developed with stakeholder involvement and covers areas including the Bahía de los Ángeles Biosphere Reserve. Octopus fishing in Baja California is crucial for local economies, despite facing a lack of processing infrastructure and environmental challenges.
