Olam Agri, in partnership with the Lake Chad Research Institute (LCRI), has introduced a new heat-tolerant, quick-maturing durum wheat variety called 'Crown' to boost wheat self-sufficiency and food security in Nigeria. This release is part of Olam Agri's 'Seed for the Future' project, aimed at overcoming barriers to wheat production autonomy in the country and developing seed varieties suited to Nigeria's topography and climate. The project also includes training smallholder farmers, especially rural women, in modern agronomic practices. In the first year, LCRI produced 10kg of pre-multiplication wheat seed varieties, and by 2025 and 2026, this number is expected to grow significantly, benefiting numerous farms. The Crown wheat variety is not only heat-tolerant and high-yielding but also suitable for pasta production, marking a crucial advancement towards Nigeria's food production goals and empowering women farmers.
