Italy is facing a critical moment in its olive oil industry as it struggles with the consequences of short campaigns in olive oil production, similar to other producing countries. By June 30, the Italian Ministry of Agriculture reported a significant decrease in total oil stocks, which stood at 179,416 tons, a 23% decrease from the previous year. Extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) stocks in particular saw an 11.7% decrease, dropping to 130,000 tons from the previous month. To avoid running out of stocks by October 31, Italy's olive sector plans to import over 150,000 tons of EVOO and about 25,000 tons of lampante/refined olive oil, with at least 70% of the imports expected to be Spanish oil. The main regions for olive oil and olive pomace storage are Puglia, Tuscany, Umbria, and Calabria, accounting for 75% of the total Italian stock.
