In 2022, Egyptian onion exports ranked third with a volume of 578,000 tons, contributing to a total agricultural export value of $3.3 billion. The increase in onion prices in the market is attributed to the reluctance of farmers to plant due to low prices and an increase in exports. However, prices are expected to decrease with the cultivation of new crops in April and May. The Egyptian onion is exported to 160 markets and has a shelf life of 5-8 months, allowing for year-round supply. The Onion Research Department at the Field Crops Research Institute is involved in breeding high-yielding, disease-resistant, and drought-tolerant onion varieties.
