In 2024, Peruvian fresh onion exports saw a significant decline, with a 14% decrease in volume and a 2% drop in value, amounting to 259,419 tons and US$104 million, respectively. Despite a 13% rise in the average FOB price per kilogram from the previous year, the reduction in volume led to an overall decrease in export figures. This downturn was attributed to the lingering effects of the 2020 container crisis, overproduction, and escalating freight costs, which collectively discouraged investment in onion cultivation. Ica remained the top onion-producing region, with La Libertad and Arequipa following. The export landscape also shifted, with a decrease in shipments to Latin America, particularly Colombia, and an increase to European markets, where red onions were in higher demand due to more favorable conditions.
