Onions are cheaper to destroy than to harvest: farmers in Khmelnytskyi are leaving the crop in the field

Some farms in Khmelnytskyi, which grow vegetables, have decided not to harvest onions this year, leaving them in the field, because the purchase price is currently below the cost of production. "This year, the area under this crop has increased, because in previous years, when the price was high and we felt a certain shortage of onions, producers were 'scared' and planted a lot of it this year," says Wanda Serdiuk. She adds that in the Khmelnytskyi region, agricultural enterprises allocated 800 hectares for vegetable crops in the 2025 season, of which 40% were for onions.
