The "Agro-Industrial Innovation for Organic Bananas" project in Piura, Peru, supported by the SeCompetitivo program of Cooperación Suiza, has come to an end, benefiting over 3,000 small-scale organic banana growers. The project concluded with the export of organic banana puree to Europe and the establishment of a cooperative for international sales of banana derivatives. The initiative focused on technological advancements in cultivation and processing, including biofermentation and ozone use for water quality improvement. It also conducted training in efficient cropping practices, irrigation, post-harvest treatment, and strengthened knowledge in governance, especially the cooperative model. The project also implemented measures to mitigate climate change, achieving a 6% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the banana chain.
