The article highlights the second largest freshwater fish, the paiche, which is becoming a significant export earner for Peru, particularly in Asia and North America. The fish, which can grow up to 3 meters in length and weigh 200 kilos, is not only a source of protein for the Amazon region's inhabitants but also contributes to their economy through its meat and byproducts. The sustainable breeding of paiche, which was previously endangered, has led to its introduction into international markets, with exports valued at USD 51,869 in 2022. The main importers are Japan, the United States, and Hong Kong, and the demand is expected to rise. The fish is also being introduced as an ornamental fish in Asia and is valued for its leather in the fashion industry. Peruvian companies are receiving technical assistance and support to increase paiche exports.
