The Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) announced the country's first cherry shipment to China, totaling 5.4 tons, with plans to export 12 tons by June 30, expecting a total of 260 tons. This export follows a 2022 phytosanitary agreement between China and Pakistan, which has enabled Pakistani cherries to be exported tariff-free to China. The Pakistan Horticulture Development and Export Corporation (PHDEC) is collaborating with Chinese authorities and local farmers to improve cherry quality and yield, particularly in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, which produces 5,000 tons of cherries annually. The article highlights the challenges faced in exporting Pakistani cherries, such as limited transportation and insufficient packaging and refrigeration facilities, but progress has been made in registering cherry orchards and a cold storage and packaging factory in Rahim Abad, meeting the necessary export conditions.
