The European Union (EU) is facing opposition from palm oil producing countries like Indonesia and Malaysia over its Farm-to-Fork strategy, which is seen as unfairly targeting produce from outside the EU. The strategy aims to improve the food chain but has raised concerns about the acceptance of existing sustainable palm oil certification standards. Despite claims of no ban on palm oil in the EU, the strategy could make it difficult for palm oil if sustainability terms are not agreed upon. The UK, a former close ally in the palm oil fight, is now focusing on boosting food trade, including encouraging food manufacturers to target the Asian middle class and seeking to become an ASEAN dialogue partner, which could potentially soften its anti-palm oil stance.
