The Paraguayan Rice Federation (Feparroz) has refuted claims that rice production in the Paraguay River basin is contributing to the significant drop in the river's level, which is currently causing transportation challenges. The decline in the river's flow has led to a reduction in the volume of cargo transported by up to 70% in the southern stretch of the river, impacting Paraguay's international trade. The Paraguayan Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (Mades) has also expressed concerns about the potential impact of the decreasing river level on aquatic ecosystems and the water supply for certain communities.
