Bangladesh has seen a significant increase in its oil and fat consumption, rising from 13.8 kg five years ago to 18.7 kg in 2019. To meet this demand, the country imported over 4.7 million tonnes of oil crops at a cost of Tk 248 billion in FY’19. In response, the Ministry of Agriculture has launched a five-year project aimed at enhancing oilseed production and reducing import dependency. The project aims to expand the cultivation area of key oil crops by 20% through the adoption of modern varieties and technology. It also seeks to boost yield by 15-20% using advanced farming practices. The ministry also emphasized the cultivation of oilseeds alongside rice, which could potentially increase production and efficiency. The project targets to raise oilseed production in 250 upazilas to offset the high import costs and address the land scarcity challenges faced in oilseed production.
