Agricultural leaders and nature organizations in the Netherlands have reached a consensus on enhancing the transition between fresh and salt water in the Lauwersmeer lake, aiming to benefit fish species and the water quality of the Wadden Sea without impacting agriculture. This decision, prompted by concerns over lake salinity targets for the Water Framework Directive 2022-2027, includes plans for a more comprehensive salinity measurement system, potential improvements in the lake's freshwater supply for agriculture, and proposals to enhance the fish-friendly discharge through the R.J. Cleveringa locks. These outcomes are set to guide future discussions on the Water Framework Directive and the long-term water management strategies for the Lauwersmeer and the coastal zone.
