Peru is the leading potato producer in Latin America, with an average production of 6 million tons per year, according to Miguel Quevedo, the coordinator of the potato chain of the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation. The country is followed by Colombia, Ecuador, and Chile, despite the drop in production to 5.3 million tons last year due to the El Niño Phenomenon. Over 711 thousand families in Peru are involved in potato farming, and the country has more than 4 thousand varieties of potatoes. The majority of these potatoes are consumed domestically, while a significant portion is exported, mainly to the United States and European countries.
