In 2023, Peru became the third largest exporter of chestnuts in the world, with shipments totaling US$ 30 million and accounting for 12.4% of the global market despite a decrease in demand. The global chestnut market saw a decrease of 28.8%. However, Peruvian chestnut exports increased by 29% from January to October of the same year, reaching US$ 34.5 million. The signing of phytosanitary protocols by the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation to start shipments of chestnut and other products to China is expected to further increase exports. The chestnut was exported to 46 countries, with South Korea and the United States being the top buyers. The main exporting regions were Madre de Dios, Lima, and Arequipa.
