In 2020, the National Commission against Biopiracy (CNB) in Peru identified a 75% increase in potential biopiracy cases, with 42 patent processes under investigation from the previous year. These cases involve the unauthorized use of Peruvian biological resources such as maca, blood of grade, sacha inchi, and more, from patent offices around the world, including China, USA, Japan, and Brazil. The Peruvian Foreign Ministry and Indecopi have opposed 34 of these cases to prevent improper patenting. The CNB monitors 268 Peruvian biological resources to ensure no unauthorized patent applications are made, adhering to the Convention on Biological Diversity and national regulations.
