The Agrarian Cooperative of Fruit Growers of Sandia (COAFSA) in Peru has made a significant stride in the agricultural sector by marketing 55 tons of organic Andean papaya directly to PM Fruits for export to Chile, with plans to supply a total of 500 tons in 2024. This initiative, supported by the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation of Peru and Sierra y Selva Exportadora, represents a major commercial success for COAFSA, which comprises 475 small producers, predominantly women. Despite facing challenges from the Covid-19 pandemic and social conflicts, COAFSA is on track to increase its production to 30 tons per week by early 2025, employing sustainable farming practices. This effort not only enhances the local economy and supports small-scale farmers in the Puno region but also cements Peru's status as a key exporter of Andean papaya, primarily to the Chilean market.
