Peruvian asparagus exports saw a decrease of 8.8% in volume and 8.4% in value in 2020, according to the director of the Peruvian Institute of Asparagus and Vegetables, Carlos Zamorano Macchiavello. The decrease was due to the coronavirus crisis, which led to difficulties in finding new customers, restrictions on movement affecting harvest and packing activities, the closure of the catering industry in destination markets, and increased air freight costs. A strike in the agricultural sector also impacted the sector. The presence of Mexican asparagus has increased competition in the US, the main export market. Efforts are being made to remove the fumigation requirement for Peruvian asparagus and reopen the Australian market.
