Peru's avocado exports, which make up 99% of its total avocado production, are experiencing a decline in value despite an increase in volume. The global logistics crisis and a shift in import preferences towards regions like Israel, Slovenia, and Morocco have increased competition for Peru in the European market. However, the U.S., which faces import disruptions from Mexico and water shortages in California, has presented a significant market opportunity for Peruvian avocados. Despite inflation affecting household spending, Peruvian avocados have found favor in the U.S. market, reaching 29% of total exports. Other key destinations include the Netherlands and Spain. Despite the challenges, Peru's avocado cultivation has expanded, with the national planting area more than doubling from 18,000 hectares in 2017 to 43,000 hectares, primarily in the La Libertad area.
