The sugarcane agroindustry of Peru represents 5% of the agricultural GDP and is responsible for 85% of the national sugar market. These results were presented during the event The sugarcane agroindustry as a driver of development, an important meeting organized for the first time in Peru and in alliance with the Union of Latin American Sugar Producers (UNALA), with the aim of promoting positioning actions and exchange experiences carried out by its members in the various Latin American countries. The sector generates more than 100,000 direct and indirect jobs. The sugarcane industry has managed to diversify through the production of ethanol. This substitute product for gasoline for vehicles generates fewer polluting gases compared to traditional fossil fuels.
