The Pew Charitable Trusts is urging the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) to adopt a new harvest strategy for managing North Atlantic swordfish. A harvest strategy is a management procedure that helps regional fishery management organizations (RFMOs) like ICCAT set catch limits and rules for extended periods. This can minimize disputes among member states over quota levels. ICCAT is currently evaluating such a strategy following scientific simulations of various fishing activities and environmental conditions. Esther Wozniak of Pew's international fisheries team highlights that harvest strategies are a contemporary approach to fishery management.
