In 2020, the Philippines saw a nearly 4% increase in chicken egg production, reaching 605,786.16 mt (12.721 billion pieces) due to swine farmers shifting to egg production following the African Swine Fever outbreak. This surge led to a decrease in egg prices toward the end of the year. As of January 1, 2021, the chicken layer population grew by 4.19% to a record 42.928 million birds. However, chicken meat importers are seeking government assistance due to the tight poultry supply and import bans from countries with bird flu outbreaks, including the UK, Czech Republic, and Russia. The Meat Importers and Traders Association of the Philippines is advocating for zonal bans instead of complete bans on poultry imports from bird flu-free zones.
