Germany: pig slaughter in August is on the decline

Pig slaughter in Germany was also clearly down in August compared to the same month last year. As can be seen from data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), with just under 4.22 million pigs, 194,300 animals or 4.4% fewer were hooked by meat producers. In the first eight months of this year, the number of slaughtered animals fell by around 1 million animals or 2.8% to 34.51 million pigs compared to the same period in the previous year. If you take the pre-Corona year 2019 as a benchmark, 1.92 million or 5.3% fewer pigs were processed. Compared to January to August 2020, pork production declined by “only” 2.0% to 3.32 million t due to higher slaughter weights.
