The University of Debrecen's Agricultural Genomics and Biotechnology Center is conducting research to develop and enhance domestic pigeon breeding in Hungary. This initiative aims to rejuvenate the country's collapsed pigeon meat industry and support farmers by introducing precision technologies and creating special meat products. The research focuses on exploring the genetic diversity and structure of Hungarian and Central European domestic pigeon populations, as well as identifying genetic polymorphisms related to meat production. The project involves a multidisciplinary team of experts, students, pigeon breeders, farmers, and museum staff, and is open to further collaborations.
