Maguey producers in Aguascalientes, Mexico, are facing significant losses due to pests and diseases affecting their agave crops, with the "Picudo" pest being the most notable. This issue has been worsened by recent humid rains following a drought, leading to the spread of fungi, predators, and other pathogens. The economic impact is substantial, with the loss of individual maguey plants valued around 400 pesos. In Amarillas de Esparza community, five thousand plants have been affected, resulting in over one million 200 thousand pesos in losses. The Maguey-Mezcal Product System and the State Council for Plant Health are working with producers to address this critical situation.
